Hi Bill,

Turning on / off notifications for E-Mail is much the same on tablets and phones:
- Open Gmail (I think it's the same in the E-Mail app as well).
- Go to menu
- Settings
- choose your email address (options are "General settings", "blah@xxxxxxxxx", "About GMail").
- Uncheck notifications.

If you do that, you won't get notified about new email messages, but they will still be downloaded.

The other option possibly of interest here, is in the same place but a little further down that screen, "Sync mail". If you uncheck that, it won't automatically download new messages, you will need to two finger swipe down to refresh and check for new mail manually.

It's a subtle difference - personally I would either have both checked (to download new mail as it arrives and notify you), or uncheck both and manually look for new mail.

Regards

Quentin.
