The Prothonotary Warbler project site at the Dutch Gap Conservation Area is
on pace for a record year. Thus far this season, 330 nestlings have been
banded there in the project's 131 nest boxes. 110 adult breeders have been
captured as well. Of those 110, 89 are returned breeders from previous
years (many of whom were originally nestlings in project boxes). 19 are
new to the project, and the remaining 2 are foreign encounters (originally
banded as nestlings in a prior year at the Deep Bottom Park Prothonotary
project site). In addition, 123 eggs have been counted in the Dutch Gap
boxes in the last 3 days, and thus there's quite a bit more to come!
On an unrelated note, I captured a male red-eyed vireo in Powhatan last
week that I had originally banded there as an adult in May 1997 ! Thus the
bird is at least 9 years old. The longevity record for a red-eyed vireo is
10 yrs 0 mo. Getting close with that bird! It was in excellent condition,
its plumage looking just as good as any 2-yr old. Would sure like to see it
back next year!
