A small group of us birded Amelia WMA this morning and found an immature male MOURNING WARBLER which presented quite an ID challenge. It was foraging in the lower limbs of an uprooted maple at the edge of the dam of Saunders Pond. The Gold Book lists it as a rare transient in the Piedmont, more regular in fall than in spring. There are no entries for the species in the Birds of Virginia's South-Central Piedmont, and no entries anywhere close in eBird. It may well be a County record For those who may want to try for the bird, be aware that there is dove hunting at the WMA except on Sundays. Wendy Ealding Powhatan County
