Hello Virginia Birders,

The Important Bird Areas (IBA) program is looking for volunteers to
participate in Golden-winged Warbler or Appalachian Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker surveys this spring. This is a great chance to get involved
in the IBA program and to increase conservation efforts aimed at
protecting these vulnerable species. We will be working with the US
Forest Service to gather information about the exact breeding
distribution of these species in Virginia, which are poorly known. This
information will then be used to help us define new IBAs and to develop
conservation plans. =20

Sapsucker surveys will take place in the Mt. Rogers area in SW Virginia
on April 28th through the 30th (or whatever portion of this that you can
make). We will be filling in known 'gaps' in our knowledge of Sapsucker
distribution in this area. =20

Golden-winged Warbler surveys will take place in Highland, Bath, and
potentially Allegheny Counties (depending on how many participants we
have) on the weekend of June 4th. Margaret O'Bryan has graciously
offered her farm as the headquarters for this event and a potluck BBQ
will follow the survey on Saturday to reward everyone for their efforts.

Both are beautiful areas and should be a lot of fun. Please let me know
if you are interested in participating and I will provide more details
to you then. I look forward to hearing from you all!

Sincerely,=20
