Got a later start at the Wetlands in Richmond today, but ran into Len Smock
and we had some great birds.
Within the first five minutes we found a singing BLUE-WINGED WARBLER on the
side of the main path in. He was still in the area, though closer to the
river, on our way out, and a few other birders were able to find him, too.
Shortly after seeing the Blue-wing, we went back to the first trail off the
main stretch (closest to the houses, toward the boardwalk) to cross into
the wetlands proper, where we were able to spot a singing NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH and a WORM-EATING WARBLER. On the way back, a pair of LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSHES were in their place, and in good view, giving us a great
comparison between the two waterthrush species.
We came up a bit short on swallows and raptors today, though I did pick up
a BROAD-WINGED HAWK flying high over Landria Dr on the way out. We had a
good 11 warbler species, including two PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS and COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT on territory.
Had 55 species total (full list below). Not bad!
