And our chickadees hatched! These tiny chicks are hard to see, but when I checked (chicked?) the nest this morning, there they were. This came about two days early, in my estimation. The eggs were laid between April 11 and 15, 2009. From what I learned on the Web, in two weeks the fledglings will leave the nest, and our chickadee counts will soar - up to 3 - 5 a day for a while. Yesterday was the first day since last Sunday that a new bird species did not visit our area. The bluebirds fledged on 25-Apr-09! Friday evening there was lots of activity around the bird box with out back both parents making frequent trips with food. Late Saturday afternoon when we sat out back there were no bluebird sightings around the box so we checked and it was empty but for one unhatched egg. So our first brood of 4 young bluebirds is out in the world! The eggs were laid in cold rainy times and the young fledged to record April heat! Hope they're ready for anything and everything out there. Caroline Coe Chesterfield County You are subscribed to VA-Richmond-General.
