VA Birders,
I have added a few things to my website (www.virginiabirding.org) that
might be of interest. First, Todd Day provided me with a copy of his
spring arrivals worksheet. For the past two years and now this year,
Todd has made a valiant attempt to keep track of the date of the first
arrival in spring for many species. There are a few headaches with
trying to keep track of something like this which are outlined at the
top of the worksheet, but overall it provides a good idea of when to
expect certain species in the state. Please have a look at it and
provide him with constructive comments or additional sightings.
Second, Larry Lynch provided me with some photos of a Glaucous Gull that
he and others saw in the City of Richmond last weekend (I think that's
when it was!) and I've added them to the photo page.
Finally, I thought it would be interesting to have a place for folks to
display their Virginia lists so I have added a section for that. There
are a few shown as examples. This is also an area that has issues
because the status of some birds within the state is always a question.
This is just for fun though so I'm not going to worry too much about
that. I've posted a list with all the VA birds on it and you can simply
download it, delete the ones you haven't seen, and then send it back to
me and I'll post it. Ned has done a nice job of separating the species
he's seen into the categories where he thinks they fit and David Clark
also did a nice job of putting a list at the end with "other" species he
has seen. You can segregate your list if you want to or not if you
don't want to. A list is a personal thing and you can put whatever you
want on it. Remember, this is JUST FOR FUN (and is in no way associated
with VARCOM), so please don't take it out on me or the list if you think
someone's else birds are mis-identified or just plain fiction. I've
gone round and round about how to do this with many people and it seems
this is the best compromise. All are welcome to post as long as you
follow these simple guidelines.
Happy birding to all!
