I found a GH Owl (fledged young) in the Springfield sector of the FT Belvoir
CBC this time around. I have been a little frustrated in past years 'cause I
know they're out there, just can't get them during the count....
GH Owls had been heard in this neighborhood (NV ADC map 21- F9 - Hatch Lake)
by residents - so at 5:30 a, I was there - a man out walking his dog told me
that the police patroled on a regular basis and I told him that was fine, I
was glad to see my tax dollars at work and maybe I could show them an owl...
We also had 5 Barred Owls in the sector, which matched an all time high for
Springfield....Two of the owls were very active at dusk near the visitor center
of Hidden Pond Park...we had a third one calling from a distance.
Our fledgling owl survey group in NoVa is still interested in hearing from
you if you have any owl sightings to report. Let one of us know what you are
seeing and where....this will help to form a picture of where owls may be
breeding amidst the urban sprawl...sightings will be kept confidential if need
be...
