Spent a few hours today visiting parts of
Richmond County north of Warsaw along the
Rappahannock River in the morning (Fones Cliffs,
Singerly pond, and Mulberry. The river had
little activity but I did find 1 royal tern, 1
caspian tern, and 55 forster's terns, as well as
4 adult and 6 immature bald eagles. Milo fields
and grassy marshes at Mulberry (private hunting
reserve) were full of bobolinks (490) as well as
13 blue grosbeaks and 6 indigo buntings. Very
few sparrows around yet. Mulberry which has a
large good breeding population of marsh wrens had
9 and I didn't get to the places where they are
usually most common. Also lots of yellowthroats
(28) but few other warblers. I also saw 3 great
egrets and about 950 swallows, (all that were
close enough to identify were tree swallows).
Other birds seen included 7 least and 1 solitary
sandpiper at Mulberry.
I had to get to Warrenton by 2:30 but on the way
back I made a brief stop at the Horner's Mill Rd
plowed field in Leedstown (Westmoreland co) to
check for shorebirds, and all that I could find
were 33 killdeer.
All the best
Fred
