Hello Virginia Birders,
There is still room for about 4 more volunteers to assist on the
Golden-winged Warbler surveys in Highland and Bath counties being
conducted on June 4th. This is a large-scale effort that will assist
the Virginia Audubon Important Bird Areas program, the US Forest
Service, and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in determining the exact
breeding distribution of Golden-winged Warblers in VA. There is
currently very little known about this species' distribution and the
extent of hybridization with Blue-winged Warblers, although they have
been declining markedly over recent years and may be at danger of
extirpation in VA. Our broad sweep of target surveys will benefit
management of this species and will help us to target priority areas for
conservation and we need all the help we can get to achieve this goal.=20
We've got lots of folks already on board and a celebratory potluck will
follow the surveys on the 4th at Margaret O'Bryan's farm in Highland
County, so come join in the fun! (It's certainly not a bad time of year
to be birding in the mountains either!). If you are interested, please
