I spent a few hours at Occoquan Bay NWR this morning. The place was gorgeous,
with all the blades of grass covered in frost. Highlights were 2 common
yellowthroats along Charlie Rd. close to the river, several flyover American
pipits, 5 tree sparrows near the parking lot, several singing Fox Sparrows,
many winter wrens, and 2 eastern meadolarks. On the river were many hooded
mergansers (over 50), plus about a dozen red-breasted mergansers, many
bufflehead, ruddy ducks, and lesser scaup. At the marina overlook there were
several pied-billed grebes and 2 canvasback.
