Howdy!
Yesterday, Nov 5, I spent the day in King William
County in the Middle Peninsula. The highlight
was thousands of waterfowl in The Pocket which is
in the Pamunkey Indian reservation along the
Pamunkey River. I have never seen so many birds
here. These waterfowl included...
(These numbers are based on my memory, not on my
notes which are at home)
2100 coots
1100 pintails (at dusk 5600 ducks flew out of the
marsh where these birds were, indicating that
there were a lot more birds in the marsh than I
could see and count from my vantage point.
over 100 Gadwall
a few dozen shovelers, black ducks, and american
wigeons
over 300 green-winged teals
over 200 ruddy ducks
a smattering of blue-winged teals, buffleheads,
mallards, pied-billed grebes, and lesser scaups.
over 3000 Canada Geese (what a sound as the
golden full moon rose in east and the west glowed
magenta!!)
1 snow goose
6 tundra swans
3 snipe
1 great egret
135 ring-necked ducks (55 male, 80 female) at a
nearby mill pond
Last year there was a large roost of black
vultures along the river but this roost is no
longer here.
Earlier in the day in Upper King William Co were
about 35 hermit thrushes (all over the place in
the pine woods at Zoar State Forest and my
property near Beulahville) I also had my first
two blue-winged teals for my property who were in
the oxbow pond with a pair of hooded mergansers,
16 wood ducks, and a ruddy duck. There were also
5 rusty blackbirds there.
