Hello all,
This morning's walk at Runnymeade Park in the Town of Herndon turned up quite a
surprise.
Not only did we see four Yellow-crowned Night Herons, but we observed two of
them mating and engaged in nest building activity.
The under construction nest is easily visible in a tree just downstream from
near the junction of the Woodland Trail with the trail that parallels Sugarland
Run.
Woodland Trail is reached from a point quite near the small parking area that
is accessed from Herndon Parkway.
In addition to the herons, we saw what we are quite sure is a nesting
Red-shoulder Hawk (the nest is in an area where we've seen this species nesting
in years gone by).
Also, we were treated to good looks at a Magnolia Warbler, numerous
Yellow-rumps, Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers, and various of the usual birds that are
found in a wooded area with a flowing stream.
