VA Birders,
Today, while working around the yard, I heard a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO calling
from the thick foliage of a tree top. It must be nesting nearby because I am
hearing it often. Around noon I heard a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER in another
tree. The resident male SCARLET TANAGER sang from the top of a locust tree
for most of the day, and a male YELLOW WARBLER could be seen flitting about
the yard. A male AMERICAN REDSTART is also singing from just below the edge
of the yard in the woods. There were also six CEDAR WAXWINGS checking out
the still green cherries of the cherry tree this afternoon. The two pairs of
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS that are nesting in the nest boxes on our property are
busy carrying food to young ones, and one of a nesting pair of GRAY CATBIRDS
kept visiting the suet feeder throughout the day.
