With the cold snap this weekend, winter birds have been in evidence all
around the area.
In the yard, all seen at once under a hedge, fox sparrow,(1st one in 2
years), white crowned, dark eyed junco, white throats and Carolina wren.
Marsh on route 737; many ruby crowned kinglets, yellow rumps, white
throats singing, robins.
Gala Lake in Appomattox County; 4 buffleheads, 2 males and 2 females
first time seen there.
Juvenile Coopers Hawk has taken up residence in my yard. Got a song
sparrow on Sat. morning and would not be run away all day. I went out to
scare
him off several times but he just moved a little higher in tree and looked at
me. Other times of the day he sat in a bush outside bedroom window looking
in. He was still here at 5:30 p.m. on Sat. Sunday he appeared and checked
out all feeders, flew onto the rail of the deck and sat there then eventually
went to the bedroom window again. I think he was looking at himself in the
glass.
