Hello all,
Twenty people took advantage of the brisk, sunny weather this morning to look
for waterfowl, and other birds, on various lakes and ponds in Reston, VA and
the lake at Lake Fairfax Park. The walk was co-sponsored by Reston Association,
Fairfax Audubon Society, and The Bird Feeder in Reston.
Lake Newport had CANADA GEESE, AMERICAN COOT, and a male RUDDY DUCK.
Lake Fairfax had 30+ RING-necked ducks, RUDDYS; a PIED-billed GREBE; BELTED
KINGFISHER, and GREAT BLUE HERON.
Lake Ann was quiet but we did see SHARP-shinned HAWK and a RED-bellied
WOODPECKER in the nearby neighborhood.
Lake Thoreau had female RUDDY DUCKS and CANADAS.
Lake Audubon had three male BUFFLEHEAD DUCKS; a BELTED KINGFISHER and two
RED-tailed HAWKS circling overhead at the western end of the lake.
The westernmost pond (accessible from the parking lot for the W&OD trail next
to Old Reston Ave.) at what was the Sallie Mae building had a male AMERICAN
WIGEON; three BLACK DUCKS; MALLARDS, and yet another BELTED KINGFISHER.
We also spotted TURKEY AND BLACK VULTURES, two RED-shouldered HAWKS, and a
RING-billed GULL along with other regulars such as AMERICAN ROBIN, BLUE JAY,
CHICKADEE, and NORTHERN FLICKER.
All in all, a delightful morning to be out bird watching.
