1. Rode my bike to work today for the first time this week. Don't know when
over the last week they came back, but the warbling vireos are back in
force. I heard 3 birds singing between the airport and Daingerfield Island,
and another just south of the 14th St. Bridge.
2. Forgot to mention that I saw my first fledglings last Saturday: 4 wet
Carolina wrens huddled in a sapling white pine.
3. Notwithstanding the warbling vireos, migration seems to have been stalled
by the cold winds the last couple of days (if White Oaks Park is any
indication). But on Wednesday, I was treated to a little nature in action.
The resident Coops were perched on a branch. The female walks over to a
very-picked-clean chunk of carcass (looked like a half a chicken breast with
the meat cut away) and started picking at it desultorily. I minute later I
heard a non-standard vocalization, looked back, and see them in flagrante
delicto. Apparently, the way to a woman's heart is through her stomach.
