On Saturday 02/02/02, sixteen members of the Augusta Bird Club and one
member of the Lynchburg Bird Club made the annual trek to Highland and Bath
Counties. It was a beautiful sunny day with snow showers. A typical
Highland County winter day. We were not alone; along the way we encountered
a 5 vehicle group from the Roanoke area and a 10 vehicle group from the Cape
Henry area.
Arriving in McDowell around 9 a.m. we found the Evening Grosbeaks in a tree
in front of the second house on the right after you cross the bridge. There
were many females and a few males. Other target birds were Rough-legged
Hawk (2) on Rt. 640 north of the intersection of 644; Golden Eagle in
flight (Immature) on the West side of Snowy Mountain (Rt. 644); Bald Eagle
at the north end of Pump Storage reservoir Rt. 600, Bath County and
Black-capped Chickadee. Other highlights: Horned Larks, Northern Harrier
and Ravens. Our most unusual bird of the day was a Northern Goshawk toward
the upper end of the Pump Storage Reservoir, Rt. 600 spotted by the
hawk-eyed Brenda Tekin.

One of our target birds, Loggerhead Shrike, eluded us although it was seen
by the group from Cape Henry moments before we arrived at the same spot.
