One of the pleasures of living in the Cayuga Lake Basin (as I did 1987-1994)
was the annual compilation of arrival dates of migrants, something that is
done mostly regionally in Virginia. I wonder whether this listserv would be
a good place to broaden that practice to the state level. Some birds that
are arriving now (Eastern Phoebes) certainly wintered south of Virginia, but
because wintering phoebes are with us year-round in the southern part of the
state (along with catbirds, thrashers, Blue-headed and White-eyed Vireos,
American Bittern, Tree Swallows, etc.), these wouldn't be candidates for the
sort of list I'm suggesting. Rather, I'm thinking more of the
longer-distance migrants that would be indubitably new arrivals in the
calendar year.
So far, in 2003, I think the new arrivals would be:
Purple Martin (earliest in Suffolk?)
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Pectoral Sandpiper
Are there any others (swallows?) I'm missing?
