VA Birders,
The good folks in Maryland keep a composite list each year which
consists of the first sighting of each species on the state list by any
birder in the state. They affectionately call it the "comp list". It
is compiled as a percentage of the total birds on the state list so that
everyone can track what percentage of the birds have been seen each
year. It's pretty interesting to compare years once you have a compiled
set of data (I think we would have done excellently last year), but in
the mean time, it's just plain fun.
I have decided (although some tardily) to be in charge of keeping such a
list for Virginia this year. With help from the VA Bird archives, Todd
Day, Ned Brinkley, and a few other hardy soles, I have put together a
list of how we are doing so far this year. I am certain, however, that
I missed a few sightings and that's where everyone out there reading
this comes in. Please review the list at:
http://www.obscure-reference.com/~sheath/
and see if you have sightings to add. Additionally, I may not have the
exact first sighting of the year for some species so if you have a
sighting that is earlier than the one on the list and you want your name
in lights, send it in. I'll be happy to update the list with your sighting.
I think this will be great fun as the year progresses to see how high we
can get the percentage. Let me know what you think. Comments are welcome.
Singing phoebes and pine warblers are everywhere. Bring on spring!
