For those who may be interested, I was able to find out what happened at
last night's (May 19) public meeting of Highland County Board of Supervisors
on the Highland New Wind Tunnel (HNWD).
The hearing began at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 19 and ended at 1:55 a.m.
this morning! There was a long presentation by attorneys for HNWD and for
almost an hour, between 7:30 and 8:25, several members (20 or so) of the
public spoke in favor of the project. There was a short break and the floor
was turned over to the 75+ people who spoke for 5 hours in opposition.
Given the lateness (after midnight), dozens more in opposition had left by
time their names were called.
The Supervisors voted to table the matter. Not sure what the reconvene date
is and their next regular meeting is June 7 and there is some speculation
they will make a final ruling by then.
If the recent proposals from several Senators builds momentum in support of
limiting and/or eliminating the federal funding and/or tax breaks, I suspect
quite a few proposals for new construction of these wind turbines will be
withdrawn.
