I realize that this is not a Virginia bird but I wanted to
get word out into cyberspace. The Arlington County van
trip to Cape Henlopen, DE, were told by a birding couple (who left before we
got their names) that they had seen a Tufted Duck at Silver Lake, just south
of
Rehobeth Beach (MD/Del Delorme 45 6B). We found what was probably a first
winter male Tufted Duck. The bird had
a noticably tufted head although the tuft was not as long
as it would be in an older male. The sides were bright
white and lacked the white streak up the side present on
Ring-necked ducks. Also the coloration of the bill
matched that of Tufted rather than Ring-necked. There is
of course, the consideration that the duck may be an
escape from a wildfowl collection. Anyhow, if anyone has
any information about this bird I would love to know about
it.
