This morning Sharon Lynn and I saw 8 Red-necked Grebes, 6 Horned
Grebes, and 2 Pied-billed Grebes at Dyke Marsh. Two Red-necked Grebes
were seen from the end of the marina. We spotted the others from the
overlook to the little gut and from the boardwalk. Two of the 8
Red-necked Grebes showed some red on the neck, while the others
appeared to be in basic plumage. Scaup numbers continue to decrease
with only 4 Lesser and 1 male Greater present near the end of the
boardwalk.
One Osprey was sitting on the pilings off the picnic area, waiting for
a mate, no doubt. We couldn't find any of the other Ospreys that Kurt
reported seeing yesterday. A beautiful soaring adult Bald Eagle was the
only other raptor. There were over a hundred Common Mergansers on the
river, perhaps half as many Red-breasted, and 4 Hoodies.
No passerines of note, except for 3 Catbirds.
