All,
I spent a few hours at Thompson WMA this morning. Started out along
Leeds Manor Road where the Yellow Warblers were singing up a storm where
the creek comes close to the road. I hiked the lower Ted Lake Trail up
to the point where it starts getting steep and then came back. Best
birds were 3 separate Blue-winged Warblers, a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a
singing Nashville Warbler, and two singing Yellow-breasted Chats. Also
heard/seen were Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Black-throated
Blue Warbler, White-eyed and Red-eyed Vireo, Indigo Bunting, Scarlet
Tanager, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Wood Thrush and Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher.
I then went to the Trillium Trail on the upper side of Thompson and
hiked the loop. For you flower buffs, the trillium are not yet at peak
but many are blooming and it was gorgeous. Best birds there were
several Cerulean Warblers, one very vocal Worm-eating Warbler. Also
heard/seen Ovenbird, Hooded Warbler (several with very odd songs),
American Redstart, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Wood Thrush, Scarlet
Tanager, Great-crested Flycatcher, and one non-singing Blue-headed
Vireo. For some reason Kentucky Warbler eluded me.
