Did a Road Trip to Colonial Beach:
Colonial Beach is an Osprey freindly town which has about 10+ Osprey
nesting perches, some of them right above parking lots. And believe it
or not they get occupied by Ospreys even though they within 50' of auto
and pedestrian traffic. Today, I only saw one Osprey. I talked to a
local and he said that they usually show up on Mar 12; so I was a
little early. I did observe and get my best photos of a mature Bald
Eagle trying to steal nesting material from a human prepared Osprey
nest. Also of note at Colonial Beach:
Double-creasted Cormorants - 100+ (If there was a piling there was one
perching on it).
Buffleheads - 5
Lesser Scaup - about 50
OK - the latest craze - 1 Redneck Grebe
Fish Crow - 12
Mute Swan - 2
Plenty of Ring-billed Gulls
Osprey -1
Bald Eagle-1 (Best photos yet)
Grackles, Robins, and Redwing Blackbirds - didn't count - but plenty.
Also checked Curtis Lake boat launch ramp, just off Hwy 17 about 5
miles north of Fredricksburg:
Buffleheads - 7
Greater Scaups - 12
Ruddy Duck - 8
Double-creasted Cormorant - 1
Mute Swan - 1
Great-blue Heron - 1
Red-wing Blackbirds - 20
Domestic Geese - 7 (They ran to my car as soon as I opened my window -
somebody has been feeding them).
Also did the Comfort Suites Pond and all the Usual Suspects were there.
Was able to observe and photo a RNGR with a fish, no mean feat as the
poor guy had to constantly dive underwater to avoid the Ring-billed
gulls try to steal his fish.
