This has been interesting! It reminds me of of a pelagic trip my son
and I took several years ago. While out in the gulf stream, or near it,
some 50+ miles from land, on a pelagic trip with Brian Patteson we came
across a female Common Yellowthroat, clearly 50+ miles off course. We
captured her and she was released when we returned. Someone, I don't
remember who, exclaimed that we had degraded the genetic trust! We had
saved a bird that should not have survived! Perhaps there is a lesson
here as it applies to wintering hummers. I don't know! Hopefully they
survive. But if they don't, whose fault is it? It's not clear to me who
to blame.
