Just a progress report on the Northern Saw-whet Owl banding in Rockingham
County, VA. To date we have banded 134 saw-whets since 31 October. This
is our second highest total but with Charles Ziegenfus helping with the
banding, we have increased the banding hours quite a bit this year.
We have caught five owls that were previously banded and four of the owls
that we banded in previous years were caught this fall at other banding
stations. Two of them were captured at or near the Prince Edward Point
Bird Observatory, ON, on the north shore of Lake Ontario. The others were
recaptured in PA and WV.
We have had a fairly steady stream of birds without any big peaks in the
numbers so far. It appears that the migration may continue into the first
week of December. I will try to post a more complete summary at the end
of the season.
