It was a pleasant cool morning for a hike around Beaver Lake at Pocahontas
State Park. There was a SPOTTED SANDPIPER seen flying and perched near the
dam. It seems a little early for a fall migrant and the bird was not in full
breeding plumage - it had spots on the breast but not the belly.
Other highlights included a GREAT BLUE HERON wrestling with a huge fish
about 15" long that it couldn't swallow. It stabbed the fish repeatedly,
tossed
it on the ground with an audible thwack that I could hear from across the
dam. I also had great close-up looks at an OVENBIRD and a female COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT.
