On the Luray Valley North CBC yesterday, around midday, we
found a single adult SNOW GOOSE mixed in with the domestic
and Canada Geese on the pond in front of the entrance to the
Luray Caverns. The Snow Goose was distinguished by its
smaller, more compact frame, the extensive black on the
primaries, the pink bill with black grin patch and strong
curve at the base, and pink legs. I'm told this is an
unusual bird for the area! (I'm from PG County, MD).
Photos will be posted to my website later today (I'll send a
message to va-bird when they're ready; I'm posting this
e-mail now in case anyone wants to go after the goose today
-- it will be interesting to see if it hangs around).
Sorry I didn't get to this earlier...we had a 20-hour day
yesterday!
Cheers,
D
P.S. A rare bird report was submitted to the CBC coordinator
of our circle.
