VA BIRDers,
The influx of Red-necked Grebes was not just an overnight phenomena - about
one hour after Sue Heath noted the single Red-necked at the UOSA pond in
Centreville I noted 3 Red-neckeds. This would imply that the birds were
still flying in near noon. (The UOSA pond also held a Pied-billled Grebe, a
pair of Gadwall, 56 Hooded Mergansers, 46 Common Mergansers, and 1
Red-breasted Merganser; an E. Towhee was also calling).
There were another 3 Red-necked Grebes off the fishing pier at Leeslyvania SP
at about 3 pm, moving from Virginia to Maryland waters. These birds were
mixed in with about dozen Lesser Scaup.
A visit to Mason Neck SP overlook of Belmont Bay did not turn up any
addtional Red-necked Grebes. But the Osprey was still out there on the
platform. I also noted a couple Hooded Mergansers, ca. 370 Common
Mergansers, 6 Red-breasted Mergansers, ca. 1000 Lesser Scaup, and small
scattered bunches of Ruddy Ducks.
