Ravens have become fairly common in recent years along VA Rt. 20=
both north
and south of Scottsville, generally within a few miles of the=
James River,
in northern Buckingham and southern Albemarle counties. I see=
them mostly in
the morning following the highway, scouting for roadkill. The=
most I have
ever seen together was four.
I live in Floyd County along the Blue Ridge Parkway and, while I=
wouldn't say ravens are "common" here, they can usually be found=
if you look in the right places. I saw two last evening flying=
across Rock Castle Gorge near milepost 169 on the Parkway.
Two years ago I saw 17 ravens trailing along after a bald eagle,=
also over Rock Castle Gorge. They were following the eagle in a=
huge mob, like retainers behind a king. A friend of mine has=
seen 20-some-odd ravens together in this place. They are also=
easy to find at the Foxhunters' Paradise area, around milepost=
219, in North Carolina.
There are also permanent populations on Cahas Knob in Franklin=
County, Virginia, and Pilot Mountain, Stone Mountain and Hanging=
Rock in North Carolina.
