Hello Everyone,
There was a nice improvement in activity today over last week, with 14
species of warbler observed. I started at Julie Metz Wetlands and heard a
WILSON'S SNIPE calling form the marsh. Not much else.
I arrived at Possum Point at 6:15 AM, where things were decent. There was
some diversity of warblers but fairly low numbers (all singing):
Northern Parula 4
Yellow-rumped Warbler 15
Black-throated Green Warbler 2
Yellow-throated Warbler 7
Black-and-white Warbler 2
Prothonotary Warbler 1
Ovenbird 1
Louisiana Waterthrush 2
Common Yellowthroat 3
Hooded Warbler 2
There was also a BANK SWALLOW perched on a snag near the creek, a flock of
18 LAUGHING GULLS flying overhead, the continuing pair of COMMON MERGANSERS
on a pond opposite the creek, and a vocal WOOD THRUSH. Best bird, however,
was the COMMON TERN observed over Quantico Creek that Kurt Gaskill and Marc
Ribaudo told me they had found after I ran into them along the road. Thanks
guys! I waited for about 15 minutes watching a Forster's Tern when it was
joined by the Common, though with the distance the bird was from me, it was
definately helpful to know to be looking for a Common! I might have passed
it off...
I then went on to Nokesville where highlights included a WILD TURKEY, gray
ghost NORTHERN HARRIER, a low BROAD-WINGED HAWK, and a (late-ish?)
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET. Surprisingly, an AMERICAN PIPIT was actively
calling and moving around with a couple of Savannah Sparrows off Hazelwood
Drive. I also added YELLOW WARBLER, WORM-EATING WARBLER, and eight PRAIRIE
WARBLERS.
Take Care,
Jay Keller,
