Report for Orange County
February 14 and 15, 2004
Yesterday my husband and I drove over to Orange County in search of the
reported Rough-legged Hawks. Could not locate any at the Orange County
Airport but we ran into George and Rosemarie Harris who directed us to the
Rt. 614/615 location. There we found a striking adult male dark
Rough-legged. At the 615/614 area we observed no less than 6 Northern
Harrier and two American Kestrel.
Today, Sunday, February 15, Gordy Adamski and I returned with hopes of
locating additional Rough-legged Hawk. Not only did we observe and
photograph several more Rough-legged (5-6 individuals), other noteworthy
observations were an adult Bald Eagle soaring low over Rt. 721, a good
showing of Northern Harrier including an adult female stirring up a rabbit
at the Orange County Airport, good representation of Red-tailed Hawk and
American Kestrel and a single Cooper's Hawk. Countless sparrows along Rt.
721 and two Horned Lark at the airport.
Below is link to few photos taken today, including a page showing
comparison between several of the Rough-legged Hawk observed.
