Since I'm feeling rather crotchety this morning, I want to make a comment
about etiquette. The most recent digest from VA-Bird had a request for
travel information that contained these sentences:
Do any of you birders have a good or special place to bird up there or
along the way? If so, i would appreciate your sharing it with us at the
above email address.
Since I just returned from the area in question I thought I might be of
assistance, so I dutifully replied to that address, only to get an
automated reply telling me:
To control spam, I now allow incoming messages only from senders I
have approved beforehand.
There was some rigmarole on how to get approval, but I had already used
my alloted time for being nice today.
People, if you want off-list replies, please provide a working email
address, and don't expect others to go two miles out of their way. If you
are concerned about spam and your personal address, set up a disposable
account with one of the web-based email providers such as Hotmail or
GMail. Turn on the spam filters and when it eventually gets to be to
onerous to navigate your inbox, discard it and start another.
