VA-Birders,
Saturday morning, Betty Kilgore and I decided to go to Roaches Run in
Arlington and Daingerfield Island in Alexandria in search of Ospreys. We found
a
pair at the big pond across the G.W. Pkwy from National Airport. Then at
Daingerfield Island, we found another Osprey (or possibly one of the pair from
Roaches Run had flown down there) sitting on a pile of sticks in the middle of
the green channel marker out from the restaurant. Ospreys nested there last
year, but their nest was blown away by Isabel, so we were delighted to see that
they are building another nest there.
This seems to be an excellent winter for Fox Sparrows here. From the
reports on VA-Bird, they seem to be turning up everywhere. We have counted as
many as 6 at Fort C.F. Smith Park in Arlington in the last week or 2. In
addition, I have had a Fox Sparrow in my yard since March 6. Usually, I am
lucky to
see one at my feeders once a year.
