Hi All,
Ralph Wall pointed me in the right direction regarding the unusual geese at
Lake Fairfax Park in Reston the past two days. I checked again today and found
not one, but four BAR-HEADED GEESE among the 176 Canada Geese, plus one likely
barnyard white goose. These are apparently escapes from captivity, and are
found in nature in India. They are quite interesting to look at, and could
easily be mistakened for snow geese in flight due to their white coloration, so
birders should use caution while observing white geese among flocks of Canadas.
The all-white goose looked a lot like a snow goose, but had totally white
primaries. Is there any possibility of a snow goose having white primaries? I
believe not. Again, I welcome suggestions.
Ducks present today were Ruddy, Ring-necked, Mallard, and Scaup sp., plus a
group of others too far to ID.
