The Dashing World of the Hummingbird !
Don't miss our November 13th meeting. Be there by 8 p.m. to hear Peggy
Spiegel's slide program covering a sampling of the species of Hummers that
range from Alaska to the tip of South America. Most of you met Peggy if you
had ever purchased anything from the birding store at a past VSO meeting. I
know that's where I first met her! Peggy is now retired from the birding store
business and enjoying traveling within the states and abroad in search of
birds. She is traveling here from Pearisburg, VA. She will give us all a peek
into the fast-paced life of these tiny jewels and how they manage their amazing
flying feats, feed, migrate, and raise their young. She will give us some
special insight into the ruby-throated hummingbird with hints on how to attract
them to your yard, as well as a look at those western rufous hummers that we
are, more and more, finding in some of those same yards in the Eastern states.
Early Bird Refreshments at 7:30. The meeting starts at 8:00 p.m., but come
early for refreshments and conversation with old and new friends. There will be
a drawing for a door prize, maybe even more than one! You have to be there to
win, so come join us!
Where?: Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 8922 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, at the
intersection of Rte. 236 (Little River Turnpike) and Guinea Road, about 1.8
miles west of the Beltway. From the Beltway (Rte. 495), going west along Rte.
236, turn right at the fifth traffic light (opposite Guinea Rd.); then turn
immediately left onto the service road. Go past the fire station, and turn
right at the second driveway into the church parking lot. Park in the back lot.
