November 16 Program Meeting --
Feather ID: Techniques and Application
Please join the Northern VA Bird Club at
our new meeting location in Alexandria and greet Carla
Dove of the Smithsonian
Institution. With her colleagues, March Heacker and
Nancy Rotzel, Carla
conducts specialized research into the microscopic
identification of bird feathers. It is
a newly developing field within ornithology, in which
she applies forensic methodologies
to determine the species of birds that are ingested
into aircraft engines, attached to
anthropological artifacts, or contained in prey
remains. The “Feather Lab” can do
these identifications with very small feather
fragments or tissue or blood samples.
This bird-strike data is used by both civil and
military aviation to design safer engines
and windscreens in aircraft. Data from identification
research and methods also
help to predict bird movements that can protect both
the pilots and our feathered
friends. Carla Dove collaborates with scientists in a
large variety of fields, so you can
bet that she will have many interesting stories for
us to illustrate her slide program.
Early Bird Refreshments at 7:30. The meeting starts at
8:00 p.m., but come for refreshments
and conversation with old and new friends, starting at
7:30. There will be a
drawing for a door prize. You have to be there to win,
so come join us!

To get there from I-395, take the Rte. 236 West exit
(Little River Turnpike/
Lincolnia). On Rte. 236, turn right at the
first traffic light onto Beauregard St.
Follow Beauregard approx 1/2 mile and turn left onto Sanger Ave. Go
past the William Ramsay
Elementary School, and at the end of the building turn
left into a driveway. The
Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center is in the back,
with parking.
