Virginia Birders,
The Virginia Society of Ornithology will begin publishing a journal to
record ornithological sightings in the Commonwealth. The purpose is to
have a record of bird populations, trends, and unusual reports that
birders and researchers can use. We are interested in receiving reports
such as breeding records, early arrivals/late departures by
region/county, and wintering/summering records of interest (how far
north/south do species winter?, etc). The state is divided into 8
reporting regions, which are still being tweaked.
Sightings of rarities and review list birds should still be sent to
VARCOM for review; mention of them in this publication does NOT indicate
acceptance by VARCOM.
Gene Sattler's column "Gleanings From the Web" will continue in it's
present format in the VSO Newsletter (providing Gene continues this
Herculean effort).
The reporting periods will mirror the ones used by North American Birds
and will begin with this summer's two month reporting period (June -
July), which will be published in winter 2005. For the first year the
publication will be sent automatically to all Virginia Society of
Ornithology members.
We want to thank our Volunteer Regional Editors in advance. They are:
North: Kurt Gaskill
West: John Spahr
Southwest: Roger & Lynda Mayhorn
Central: Michael R. Boatwright
South Central: C. Michael Stinson
Southeast: Adam D'Onofrio

More information regarding the reporting regions, the schedule and the
contact information for the Regional Editors will be forthcoming when
the regions are finalized. We hope you will participate by sharing your
observations with us.
