VA Birders,
This week I watched a crow pick up a stick in an open field and fly with it
into the woods. Nesting time is here.
Today a Wild hen Turkey came strolling through the yard here on Compton Mt. It
foraged for about 45 minutes before heading back into the woods.
At least one of the Purple Finches that have been here all winter is still
here. A brightly colored male came to the feeder this morning. The Red-breasted
Nuthatch that had been visiting the feeder since the 23rd of January made its
last appearance on March 3rd. The Brown-headed Cowbirds have moved in during
the past week with 8 males and 9 females coming to the feeder at once. I have
already had to remove the incomplete nest of a House Sparrow from one of our
bluebird boxes. We lost at least one adult bluebird and 5 young to House
Sparrows last year.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
