Hello, birders.
A friend and I birded Sky Meadows SP yesterday. The
wind really kept the numbers of birds down. We missed
some common species and almost missed some others.
Numbers were mostly low. The wind was the strongest
up on the ridge along the Appalachian Trail. The wind
subsided a bit after noon, thankfully. We walked from
the contact station to the Visitor's Center area up
the South Ridge Trail, continuing up to and on the
Appalachian Trail. Then we came back the same way.
Best bird was a singing Mourning Warbler along the
South Ridge Trail, located just off the trail in the
woods in between the second and third benches. I
actually caught a glimpse of the bird. It's the first
time ever that I've seen one in the park.
Other cool stuff:
A pair of Yellow-breasted Chats at the edge of the
woods along the South Ridge Trail (near second bench).
Two Cerulean Warblers, both singing in the woods along
the South Ridge Trail, heard not seen.
A Rose-breasted Grosbeak, seen singing along the North
Ridge Trail in between the South Ridge Trail and the
AT. I have to check my notes but I think I've seen or
heard this species in the summer the last few years in
this park.
Indigo Buntings and Eastern Towhees were common. So
were Turkey Vultures. I guess they really liked
soaring in all that wind. I found an Eastern
Wood-Pewee bringing nesting material to its nest,
which is near the contact station.
