Unlike Kurt I did not see 57 eagles yesterday but I saw at least 10
which is a lot for our Ridge and Valley province. Actually I am
cheating a little by posting this on the VA-Birds list because the
location is about 15 miles into West Virginia.
Henry Hawkins and Kathleen Finnegan told me about this place several
weeks ago but I didn't get up there until yesterday. Along a small
creek on Route 259 near Lost River, WV, within a stretch of about 3
miles, I saw (at least) 8 immature Bald Eagles and (at least) two
different adults. There is also an active nest visible from the road
although no birds were on the nest while we were there. While I was
watching along the road, a farmer, whose farm borders the river
there, stopped and talked with me awhile. He said that he has seen
as many as 25 eagles at one time and someone else in his family
counted 40 one morning. It appears to be a winter gathering place
like those more common on the James and Potomac Rivers. I don't know
of anything like it in the mountains. Do you?
