I just spoke with Ed Eder, a volunteer who participates in the Dyke Marsh
Breeding Bird Survey, who reports an adult Mississippi Kite perched at Fort
Hunt Road (GW Parkway) at 6:20 PM today, 11 May.
Also, the first bunch of 17-year cicadas have made their appearance. The birds
are going to have a field day! A Cardinal, Catbird, and even a Song Sparrow
were munching on them this morning. The Song Sparrow had to beat his to death
on the pavement before consuming it. The Song must have been hungry- it ate
about 3/4s of it. A big meal for a little bird!
