I tried Wednesday afternoon and this morning for the Lapwing near
Creagerstown, MD. No luck. A couple from New York may have seen the bird
briefly
around 3 PM Wednesday in the field opposite the Creagerstown cemetery, but
they
weren't positive.
Anyone wanting to try for the bird should be aware that there is now a
designated parking place off Graceham Road - a kind farmer has marked off an
area
with yellow tape and a sign "Parking for Lapwing Observers". This will keep
everybody safe and reduce the impact on the other property owners. There
were about six other parties trying for the bird, from as far afield as
Rochester, NY and Chapel Hill, NC.
It's also worth visiting the site described in Elisa Enders' post for the
Short Eared Owl show just south of Gettysburg, PA. We had at least 8 on
Wednesday, along with 3 Northern Harriers and the albino Red Tail.
Here are Elisa's directions for the owls: take Hwy 15 north out of Thurman,
MD; exit Hwy 15
at the first exit in PA (road name ends in "wehr") and turn left at the stop
sign; turn left onto Bullfrog Road; turn right onto Pumping Station Road;
and finally turn left onto Bigham Road (a gravel road with a red barn at the
end). The owls are in the fields on both sides of Bigham Road and around
the intersection with Pumping Station Road. The owl spot is about 5 miles
from Hwy 15.
