Migrant activity has picked up considerably the last few days in town,
although warblers have still been scarce in my neighborhood. On Friday I
spotted my first hummingbird as it briefly came in to the deck to check out
the orange thistle feeder. On Saturday (4/24) the yard had single singing
Blue-headed Red-eyed Vireos, and during a brief stop up at the James River
Visitor Center/Overlook on the Parkway to confirm that the restrooms will be
open next weekend for the VSO meeting Yellow-throated Warblers were
prominent, as well as the Cliff Swallows nesting under the bridge. On
Sunday new arrivals in the yard were a Wood Thrush, White-crowned Sparrow,
Yellow Warbler, and pair of Orchard Orioles, while this morning a male
Northern Oriole had arrived, and around the neighborhood I heard 2-3
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks calling, and spotted an Osprey getting an early
start ahead of the advancing rain. On Sunday a friend in town also reported
an Indigo Bunting in his yard.
