I birded Cockpit Pt. and Leesylvania State Park for a few hours this morning.
Leesylvania was by far the birdiest, but I had a few goodies at Cockpit Pt.
The ash pond held 7 species of shorebird (both yellowlegs, killdeer,
semipalmated plover, snipe, and least, spotted, and solitary sandpipers).
Warblers inlcuded the local breeders plus cerulean, Canada, magnolia,
blackpoll, black-throated blue, and black-throated green. However, numbers at
Cockpit Pt. overall were low. Leesylvania was far more active. I saw 2
Wilson's warblers, plus chestnut-sided, magnolia, Canada, blackpoll (lots),
redstart, and northern waterthrush. At the battery at Featherstone Point a
group of about 12 kingbirds sallied from the oaks to grab the many flying
insects. Several large flocks of cedar waxwings were also in the trees. The
Powell's Creek trail had a calling barred owl, acadian flycatcher, a female
rose-breasted grosbeak, Swainson's thrush, and summer tanager.
