VA BIRDers,
Visiting Egyptian Naturalist Sheriff Baha El Din and his wife Mindy (Birding
Egypt Tours) were joined by Linda Millington and myself for some birding today
in No. Virginia. We started at local hotspot Leeslyvania SP where we picked
up a few migrants as well as local birds. The nicest sighting today was a HY
Prothonotary still sporting downy feathers. Mindy soon spotted the bird's
mother feeding him deep in the brush at Bushy Point.
Other interesting birds were a couple of Turkey Vultures crusing the picnic
area, nearly 10 Osprey either kiting or feeding young, an adult Bald Eagle,
Spotted Sandpiper at Freestone Pt, YB Cuckoos, Great Horned Owl hooting at
1100,
a couple of dozen Chimney Swift, a half dozen Ruby-throated Hummers, a few E.
Pewees, three dozen Purple Martins (staging), a couple of dozen Barn Swallows,
a few Wood Thrush singing in the woods, a few No. Parulas, two HY Yellow
Warblers, a Prairie Warbler (does not breed at the park), singing Scarlet
Tanagers, Chipping Sparrows - incl. adult feeding very streaky breasted young -
Blue
Grosbeak, several Indigo Buntings, about 300 Common Grackles, and a few Orchard
Orioles.
Afterwards, we stopped at Julie Metz Wetlands Bank and quickly noted HY
White-eyed Vireo with adult, two FL E. Kingbirds with adult, and No.
Mockingbird
with downy feathers.
