VA-Birders,
While participating in the ongoing breeding bird survey at Dyke Marsh,
Fairfax County this AM, we observed 3 LEAST BITTERNS in the marsh just off Haul
Road, which several birders have enjoyed over the past few weeks. One flew
directly in front of us, while another was heard and seen briefly on the
grasses across the water, and yet another was heard just off the boardwalk but
remained elusive. One group of birders recently found eight of them while
canoeing around the area.
In addition to the Bitterns, there were a few WARBLING VIREOS, four MARSH
WRENS, and warblers included PROTHONOTARY, YELLOW, NORTHERN PARULA, and COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT.
Tomorrow may be a good time for you to take a look, as the weekly walk will
begin at 8 AM in the main picnic area. More information on Dyke Marsh can be
found at the Friends of Dyke Marsh web site at http://www.fodm.org/default.htm. ;
Consider joining the Friends (it's just $10) and help support the last
remaining substantial tidal marsh in the DC area.
Take Care,
Jay Keller
