Paula Sullivan drove a carpool van of 4 people, including myself, down to
Rappahannock NWR to look for the LeConte's Sparrow and Clay-colored Sparrow
today. We met a very cold, but determined Marc Ribaudo when we arrived.
Despite the efforts of 5 of us, we could locate neither bird. Perhaps it was
so windy, both birds stayed in the grass. We did have the pleasure of running
into Sandy Spencer, the wildlife biologist.
After about a good hour's search plus the hour and a half Marc put in before
our arrival, we called it quits. Marc had to bail, but we continued our
journey. Duck numbers were low- the highpoint being a few dozen Common
Goldeneyes, but we were treated at the end of the day to a Short-eared Owl
working the fields previously reported by Fred Atwood. We ran into Larry Lynch
at this location. After a week of fighting a tough respiratory infection, it
was nice to get out, and we did renew acquaintences with some very nice folks.
