Good evening,
I took at kayaking trip around Lake Pelham on Thursday May 23, 2002. Kayaking
is an excellent way to get close to birds.
I posted some of my pictures on the web for your pleasure:
http://community.webshots.com/user/vajfitz Click on the Lake Pelham folder.
I counted 4 pairs of swans on the lake. I paddled to a small island and found
1 pair of swans with a nest containing three eggs. I found another pair in a
cove with their six chicks. I'm afraid the swan population is getting too big
for the lake.
Of course the gesse were abundant. The small island had a goose nest with
three eggs not far from the swan's nest. Several clutches of gesse were
scattered around the lake.
The island is only about 30 feet across. Along with the two nest I saw several
eggs scattered around the island. What is this about?
Other birds:
1 Bald Eagle flew off from his treetop perch as I paddled into the cove with
the six swan chicks.
2 Red tailed hawks circiling in a thermal with turkey vultures.
1 Common night hawk swooping and diving over the tree tops.
1 Black Tern. I know they are not suppose to be around here, but I watched
this bird for over an hour and got several close views of the bird. The shape,
markings, and behaviour all confirm the id. Any thoughts?
Blackbirds in the cattails. Look closely at the cattail pictures.
Cat birds in the brush.
Various swallows
2 Kingfishers flying along the shore.
5-8 Great blue herons fishing, perching in the trees and flying along the lake.
Several Eastern kingbirds.
Spotting sandpipers along the shores and mud flats.
Green heron flying along the shore.
Regards,
Jim Fitzgerald
